Today, many people don’t believe in the existence of hell. But hell is real. Hell is reserved for those who like to sin and yet refuse to accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour. As for those who accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour, they will go to heaven when they die. For those who do not, it’s a different story.
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— where ‘Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.’
In this scripture, quoting from the book of Isaiah 66: 24, Jesus Christ says that if our hand causes us to sin, we should cut it off because it is better to enter heaven as an amputee than to go to hell having two hands. What Jesus means here is that as believers in Christ, we need to take some radical actions against sin so that we don’t end up in the unquenchable fire of hell. If social media is causing us to sin, we must choose to stop using it. If our phones are leading us astray, we must not hesitate to get rid of them. If cable or TV makes us sin, we should be willing to end our subscriptions and not watch it. If our friends make us sin, we must choose to end our relations with them. If our jobs are making us sin, we should be willing to quit.
Abstaining from anything that will lure us into sin is worth it. Living a life of holiness that will make us please God is worth it. I remember that when I gave my life to Jesus in the 80’s, messages on hell were very popular. Today, the messages of eternal security and extreme grace have overshadowed the message about hell and holiness. Back in the 80s, believers in Christ had reverential fear for God. They walked in holiness which gave them an impeccable character. Lord revive us again! Make up your mind to abstain from any form of sin. You and I will not end our journey in the eternally unquenchable fire of hell in Jesus’ name.
