Unity of spirit is essential for the body of Christ to stand firm in the roller-coaster that is our present world. Our unity is of vital importance.

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace

Eph. 4:3 (NIV)

This scripture tells all believers in Christ Jesus to ensure that they maintain unity of the spirit and follow peace with one another.

What is the Unity of the Spirit?

The unity of the spirit can be defined as spiritual oneness that believers share among themselves through the help of the Holy Spirit. This unity is not merely a human-made agreement. It’s a divine reality established by the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that unites believers in Christ into one body of Christ. This unity is beyond denominational differences and doctrines and it focuses on the experience of faith, love, peace and purpose that are shared within the Christian Community.

The members of the body of Christ are many, but the fact remains that there is only one body of Christ. It is one body with many members united as one in Christ Jesus - a great mystery.

The Bond of Peace

Aside from unity, the body of Christ should also experience a bond of peace. This peace is like a glue that holds the unity of believers together. It is so deep and internal. It doesn’t mean there will be no conflict among believers but a shared presence of peaceful harmony among them will keep the members of the body from being scattered by strife.

Keeping this Unity Forever

Every believer in Christ must be determined to keep and maintain this unity of the spirit among fellow believers forever. Every believer needs to know that when they wrong another member of the body of Christ, the whole body suffers. By following and striving for peace with one another, the unity among us through the Holy Spirit will wax stronger every day. It’s time to see ourselves as one. Let’s move beyond our differences and put on a godly behavior that reflects Christ and unites His body as one. May God’s grace empower you to achieve peace with your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus in Jesus’ name.
