The Power of Unity

Apostle Paul Kolawole

The God we serve delights in seeing us, his children, live in unity. It is unfortunate today that there is often no unity in the body of Christ. Jesus prayed for all believers in John 17:21 that they may all be one just as He and Father are. When believers in Christ unite, they will do great exploits for God. Let's go into the Book of Psalms.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing— Life forevermore.

Ps. 133:1-3 (NKJV)

This scripture teaches us that unity among believers in Christ is good and pleasant. The vivid description of “precious oil upon the head that runs to the beard just as the beard of Aaron that runs down to the edge of his garments” emphasizes the beauty and power of unity. In this scripture, oil represents the Spirit or the power of God. The Spirit or the power of God can only flow in a place where there is unity among the brethren. Unity is also likened to “the dew of Hermon descending upon the mountain of Zion where the Lord had commanded blessing.” This scripture opens our eyes to certain things about unity:

  1. Unity is good.
  2. Unity is pleasant.
  3. Unity is like the Spirit or power of God. (Oil)
  4. Unity is like dew.
  5. Unity brings blessings.
  6. Unity brings life forever.

Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

1 Cor. 1:10 (NKJV)

Paul the Apostle tells the Corinthians to be united in their words and to ensure that there are no divisions (disunity) among them. He also enjoins them to have unity of purpose and a collective sense of judgement. I believe that counsel to the Corinthian church also applies to us as modern-day believers in Christ. Here are some benefits of unity among believers in Christ.

Benefits of Unity in the Body of Christ

  1. Unity leads to collective progress
  2. Unity makes us believers love one another
  3. Unity makes us selfless
  4. Unity in believers brings confusion to Satan and his demons from the Kingdom of Darkness
  5. Unity allows the Spirit of God to move among us
  6. Unity allows the power of God to do wonders among us
  7. Unity brings us happiness
  8. Unity brings us all-round support
  9. Unity makes us enjoy the reward of obedience
  10. Unity makes the church grow spiritually and numerically

When the modern-day believers in Christ begin to live together in Unity, a powerful spiritual force will be released within the body of Christ that will bring about the greatest manifestation of the power of God that the world has ever seen. Hallelujah!
