In these last and evil days, where the doctrine of eternal security is gaining ground among believers in Christ, we need to be careful. The doctrine of eternal security teaches that “once you are saved, you are saved forever,” meaning that Jesus has forgiven our past, present, and future sins.
As a matter of fact, it is true that if a believer is saved and does not backslide or become an apostate, they stay saved. However, the moment that person turns back from following the Lord, he or she is no longer saved. When such a person continues in sin and dies as a sinner, they will not enter the kingdom of heaven. To willingly live in sin, under the pretense of grace, is a form of backsliding.
Don’t Play with Sin, Abstain from It
As believers in Christ, we must have a strong determination to not toy with sin or deliberately participate in it. We need to consciously abstain from it and live a life that pleases God.
Many believers today have perverted the doctrine of grace by embracing the false doctrine of eternal security. They commit sins with impunity and, in their ignorance, believe that God will not punish their unrighteousness because of His available and unlimited grace. Their reasoning is wrong, deadly and unwise.
God’s Will For Us Is Spiritual Maturity, Not Sinful Comfort
After we give our lives to Jesus, God does not want us to go on committing sin. He wants us to grow and become mature in Him by deliberately avoiding sin and anything that will not allow us to please Him. The wages of sin haven't changed, it is still death (Rom. 6:23) and we cannot continue in sin and expect the grace to abound (Rom.6:1).
The grace of God is not permission to sin—it is a call to holiness.
The Grace of God Teaches Us to Say No to Sin
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age. Titus 2:11–12 (NKJV)
This scripture shows us clearly that the grace of God doesn’t make us comfortable in sin. Instead, it teaches us to deny ungodliness, reject worldly lusts, and live soberly and righteously in this present world.
Stay on the Long But Sure Narrow Path of True Faith
Believers in Christ, to stay in sin is to stay in harm's way and provide an entry point for the deadly manifestation of the works of the devil, our enemy, in our lives. Run away from sin and stay on the narrow path of faith! Keep your heart fixed on Christ, and let His grace lead you—not into sin, but into a life of joy that pleases God.
