A race is a competition in which all the competitors try to finish first. Every believer in Christ must run the race life to win a price.
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.
In this scripture, Paul uses a race as a metaphor for the Christian Journey here on earth. Paul knew that to finish the race of christian life and win, there is a need to display a high level of discipline if they will finish strong and receive the eternal heavenly reward that God will give them. The Christian race is not a competition, but it is a race with great rewards and very importantly, an end here on earth. I have never seen an overweigh olympic sprinter. They all look lanky or thin which will give them the ability to run fast at any competition. The diet battle is a battle that every sprinter must learn to win to avoid being overweight. As believers (spiritual sprinters) in Christ we need to discipline our appetite for food, sex, money and every other worldly pleasure. If we refuse to discipline our appetite for all of these, it will be so difficult for us to successfully run the race of faith that is set before us.
There is a need for us to lay aside every weight and sin which can easily ensnared us by hindering our speed. We must make up our mind like Daniel not to defile ourselves with the portion of the King's delicacies. Our appetite for anything that can hinder us from from running this race till we get to the finish point must be killed. When Samson refused to kill his appetite for illicit sex, he ended up a victim and not a victor. We also need to focus on Jesus so that we can end up as winners. We should not look up to any thing other than Him. There is a tendency for us to feel like giving up, but we should never give up, because our God will never leave or forsake us.
One shocking thing about a race is that, it is not everyone that starts the race that will finish it. Some stumble, fall, and get up. Some stumble, fall but choose to stay down. And many resolve to never fall, and they succeed. As a believer in Christ, you need to maintain a strong determination to now allow anything in this present world make you stumble. Keep running until you make it to the finishing Line (heaven) and you will finish strong in Jesus’ name.
