Go To the Cave of Adullam

In our modern times of extreme busyness, every believer in Christ must make time out of no time to withdraw into solitude to have quality fellowship with God. As soon as you encounter an unpleasant situation in your life, it is time to seek the face of God for His divine intervention. Even when all is good, you still need to find time to fellowship with Him so He renews your strength.

David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. So when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.

1 Sam. 22:1-2 (NKJV)

During the time this passage talks about, David was yet to be the King of Israel and he was going through a harrowing situation. He was on the run from one city to another because Saul, the then King of Israel, wanted to kill him at all cost. David escaped into the cave of Adullam but he was not alone. His family, 400 men who were distressed, and those who were in debt or misery gathered together right there in the cave with him. Right in the cave of Adullam, David had an encounter with God where God prepared Him to become King. In that cave, he also transformed those 400 ordinary men to warriors who could withstand and triumph in any battle.

The story of David in the cave of Adullam is a lesson to us to withdraw and seek solitude so we can seek the face of God, whenever difficult times come. Difficult times don’t have to only be a harrowing experience. They can be times of spiritual growth where we learn dependency on God and our fellowship with Him leads to our total transformation. Adullam means “justice of the people” or “refuge” and it is beyond a physical location. I define Adullam as any spiritual atmosphere you create to meet your God personally in a physically quiet place. You can have an Adullam experience right in your bedroom, sitting room, or backyard. And it can also be a retreat center or a safe solitary place you are led by the Spirit to go.
