We are in the end times and materialism is at its peak. More than ever, many people place wealth and material things above everything.
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
In this scripture, Jesus, during His famous sermon on the Mount, tells us that an individual cannot serve two masters (of opposing standards) and be equally loyal to each of them. The loyalty to one of them has to be greater than the loyalty to the other. Mammon, as used by Jesus here, represents a false god of the greedy pursuit of wealth, gain, and other worldly things in a way that directly competes with a person’s devotion to God. Unfortunately, the spirit of mammon has joined the church and it has gained ascendancy over many believers in Christ today. Many believers discard regularly fellowshiping over business engagements to bring in higher finances. Many no longer pray and fast like they used to before as a consequence of being “busy”. I want to ask you some questions, as a believer in Christ, when was the last time you read your Bible? When was the last time you fasted and prayed? When was the last time you went to church? When was the last time you evangelized and won a soul for God? Where is the love and passion you had for God when you first gave your life to Jesus? Is it still ablaze or is it gone into the busyness of your life in your accumulation of wealth?
If you have lost the passion you had for God in your early Christian days, or at some point in your Christian journey, return back to the Lord. Stop running after money, riches and wealth because neither will it satisfy or save - in fact, it will lead to ruin and will leave you prey to the works of the devil.
And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
In this scripture, Moses, inspired by God, told the people of Israel to always remember the Lord as the source of their wealth, and the ability to acquire it. Wealth comes from God but when it takes or competes with God's place in your life, it becomes mammon. Child of God, be wise: do not love the gift more than the giver. God is the giver. Serve Him with total loyalty and always remember it is Him who has given you everything you have today.
